Dichroic literally means two colours. Dichroic glass dates back to the 4th century AD where use of metal oxides and silver and gold leaf within glass produced multi coloured reflective optical effects. A characteristic of dichroic glass is that the colours you see change with the angle of view, it is very like the effects you get in gemstones such as moonstone, labradorite, opal and tigers eye. Getting consistent conditions for firing glass is impossible so each piece of dichroic glass is unique. 45 different colours are available to dichroic glass artists.
